This Star Trek Thing
A lot of entertaining hoo-ha - I love that the lifting of budget constraints allows them to show
off all the cool toys in this universe.  And the characters are mostly true to form.

But, there were two things that bothered me.

-Having the whole movie take place in an alternate reality is just crying out, "Writing story
hard!"  After ten movies, dozens of novels, and hundreds of episodes, admitting you can't
think of a story to tell within the canon is like admitting you can only string viewers along with
mysterious clues which imply a fascinating artifice, only to have that artifice collapse into a
steaming pile of dumb after about one season.  Oh wait, JJ Abrams wrote Lost?

-Showing that Vulcans, deep down, have emotions = OK.  Having Uhura show unrequited love
for Spock = OK.  Having Spock make out with Uhura every time they get in the elevator != OK!
Spock is asensual, and constantly perplexed by human behavior, and that's why we love him
(Yes, I just spoke for you) - he's saying things from somewhere a little ways out.  If he gets too
human, we wind up wondering when he says X, "Is that really logical, or is he just looking for
an excuse for some more elevator time?"

-Scotty's ewok: loved it.  Not one of the things which bothered me.  I look forward to its
spinoff cartoon series.

I thought the alternate universe thing was a brilliant hack. All these years they've been layering continuity with a trowel on top of a series that was never originally intended to be anything but story-of-the-week adventure yarns. Trying to inject a new story into the middle of that edifice was going to be impossible without Comic Book Guy and Professor Frink rattling off the inconsistencies. So, screw it--it was a gordian knot; they did what you do with gordian knots. Awesome.

And actually (Frink mode activate!) I believe the original-series episode "This Side Of Paradise" has an implication that Spock had a love affair when he was younger, and it hadn't worked out. So what the hell, I'm okay with it.

You know what bugged me? The whole Kirk-gets-chased-by-brightly-colored-reptillian-macrofauna-on-an-ice-planet sequence. Evolutionarily speaking, I don't fuckin' think so. Also, Kirk-gets-command-of-a-starship-immediately-after-graduating kind of stuck in my craw.

Hey, if you are going to rip off Star Wars with your reboot, then you gotta throw some wampas and tauntauns onto the ice planet.

actually i loved the red d00der when i first saw him because what's bright red in the antarctic? ICEWORMS! and then i quickly became unhappy with it, as the monster was animated in the same style as so many recent CGI monsters, which is: "Run and scream repeatedly at the thing you're trying to eat, and not give up screaming at it". Even thought i know they spent life-months designing that thing, in the end it just looks like ILM simply copy/pasted something from Episode II and threw it in the scene.

I kind of love that, though!

The alternate reality thing didn't bug me. Quite frankly, I think it's time to inject some new stuff into the canon.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. The only part I didn't like, I mean, besides Winona Ryder, was the whole "Old Spock just happens to be in the same exact cave as New Kirk OMG" thing. Harrumph.

I think we have to assume that Spock is the primordial... we'll just say Author. Then it all fits correctly.

The alternate reality didn't bother me at all. If they hadn't done it, Ohura would have that damn thing sticking out of her ear and those god-awful sound effects would have been still playing on the bridge.
